On the Block

Today is it. Today is the meet.

I remember that as I tighten my grip.

I nervously adjust my feet

In fear that I might slip.

What do I do if I fall?

What if I jump too early?

Will I be a burden my team has to haul?

What if I do poorly?

No, I cannot get disqualified.

We have 83 points and the other team has 85.

I just have to extend my glide

And focus on my dive.

My goggles turn a cloudy gray

As the butterflies in my stomach start to grow.

Standing on the block, I wait for the official to say:

Take your mark, go!
